Real estate is certainly a referral based business just like most other businesses. Building relationships is essential to growing any business but in order to achieve long term success, we must be able to maintain them and constantly develop new ones.
One of my rules in this business is to deal direct to the decision makers or direct to another facilitator who has a direct relationship to the decision makers. This increases the chances to actually transact as opposed to making it more difficult to do so with too many people involved in trying to direct the deal.
That being said, all referrals are honored, are well appreciated and certainly warrant a fee. Depending on what your relationship is to the referral is what determines the amount of fee you are to be paid. Whether you are direct to the decision makers, one off from them or are playing the role of an intermediary, I am a big believer that all parties should be compensated fairly and accordingly.
